The guides behind ROAMAFRICA

We grew up in Namibia and South Africa, then spent years guiding for Backroads across Europe and beyond. ROAMAFRICA is what happened when we brought that standard home.

A trip through Namibia is only as good as the person driving it. The lodges matter, the vehicle matters, the light certainly matters — but the guide is the difference between a well-organised holiday and a journey people talk about for years.

Local by birth

Our guides come from here. Otjiwarongo in the north, close to Etosha. Farms at the edge of the Karoo. Small towns where the nearest cinema was four hours away and the weekend plan was always to drive further out than strictly necessary. That upbringing is not a marketing line — it is why we know which farm gate leads to a better view than the lookout on the map.

Trained abroad

Before founding ROAMAFRICA, our guides worked for Backroads, one of the most demanding active-travel operators in the world, leading small groups through the European Alps, Scandinavia and the Mediterranean. It is an unforgiving apprenticeship: you learn to run flawless logistics invisibly, to read a group within an hour of meeting them, and to solve problems before guests know they exist.

Guiding in Europe taught us the systems. Growing up here taught us the country. The combination is the whole point.

What that means on the road

  • Wilderness first aid and advanced 4x4 recovery training, refreshed annually.
  • Fluent English, Afrikaans and working Oshiwambo or Damara/Nama across the team.
  • Deep working relationships with lodge and camp staff built over years, not booked through an agent.
  • A genuine reading knowledge of the geology, the wildlife and the human history you are driving through.

One guide, all the way through

The same guide is with you from the arrivals hall to the departure gate. There is no handover between regions, no new face every third morning. By day three they know how you take your coffee and whether you would rather be at the waterhole at first light or asleep.

We cap groups at fifteen people, and we keep the guiding team small on purpose. Growing it faster than we can train people to this standard would undo the only thing that actually distinguishes us.
